The surface of the county is generally either flat or gently undulating with small hills, exhibiting a pleasing variety rather than picturesque effect.
Since 1922 it has been known as County Laois.
The first Kerwin in Beloit, Wisconsin was Rhody Kerwin in the mid 1800’s. Born in 1824, he became a sea captain from Queens county, near Belfast, Ireland. When Rhody immigrated to the United States, he landed his ship in New York. After selling his ship he migrated to Beloit. Rhody was Beloit’s first night watchman. He would patrol the downtown merchants’ stores. He had 4 sons and a daughter and lived on “Culley Hill”.
One of Rhody’s sons was John Kerwin who worked for the railroad. John had 2 sons and a daughter. One of his sons was Aaron R. Kerwin. Aaron’s father died when he was 11 years old. His only brother, Tom, was 22 years older than him and so became Aaron’s father figure. Tom Kerwin and Aaron’s mother ran the Kerwin’s Grocery Store on Beloit’s Westside.
Aaron attended the University of Marquette during the great depression, and later came back to Beloit. He worked as a salesman for Wisconsin Power & Light and Warner Electric Brake & Clutch. Later, he sold life insurance for Franklin Life.
In 1950, Aaron R. Kerwin became interested in real estate, and started working as a salesman for Herman’s Agency. He later bought Herman’s Agency and changed the name to Kerwin’s Agency.
In 1972, Kevin R. Kerwin returned from college at the University of Wisconsin and became a salesperson for Kerwin’s Agency. In 1982, Kevin became the broker of Kerwin’s Agency, and incorporated the business to Kerwin’s Agency, Inc.
